After losing the toss and being asked to bat first on a wet and spongy wicket, Kidlington 1st XI posted a modest total of 142 all out in 35.4 overs. The innings got off to a shaky start with early wickets falling regularly. At 32 for 4, the visitors were in trouble until Francis Young (48* off 69 balls) played a mature and composed innings to hold the innings together. He was well-supported by Jamie Stothard, who struck a confident 38 from 35 deliveries which included some devastating boundaries, helping to add crucial runs during a middle-order rebuild.
Despite the efforts from Young and Stothard, Kidlington lost wickets at regular intervals and failed to build lasting partnerships. Their total could have been significantly lower if not for Young’s unbeaten knock.
The standout bowler for Broughton & North Newington was Stuart Morgan, who bowled a phenomenal spell, taking 6 wickets for just 25 runs in 8.4 overs. His slow, flighted deliveries caused havoc, and he was instrumental in wrapping up the tail quickly.
Chasing 143 for victory, Broughton & North Newington never looked settled at the crease. After reaching 40 without ever really playing any attacking shots they lost groups of wickets and were eventually bowled out for just 94 in 27.3 overs. None of the batters managed to really get a start, with James Walton top scoring with 17.
Kidlington’s bowlers turned the match decisively in their favour with an aggressive and disciplined bowling display. Aman Kalyan was particularly devastating, taking 5 wickets for 22 runs in 9 overs, including two maidens. He was backed up brilliantly by young Joshua Boucher, who claimed 3 for 6 in just 5 overs, applying relentless pressure at the other end.
Kidlington’s fielding was sharp throughout the innings, with catches held and pressure maintained, not allowing Broughton’s batters to settle. A truly wonderful one handed diving catch from Craig Woods and a sharp leg side stumping from Francis Young being the pick of a tight fielding performance.
This 48 run victory cements a strong position for Kidlington early in the season and showcases their bowling firepower. With continued bowling performances like this, they will be a force in Division 5B.
